Balance Tracking Systems is the brainchild of Oakland University professor Daniel Goble, who designed the BTrackS system that drives the balance board hardware. The software supports data visualization and exporting into other programs as well. It includes a broad database that allows you to benchmark your balance performance against other cohorts based on age, sex, and other metrics. The balance plate itself is a rugged yet portable device. It runs on USB power so you don’t need to bring along an external power source, and the built-in carrying handle makes transportation easy. The Interactive Metronome system allows for accurate measurement of reaction time, which can then be used to infer data regarding cognitive abilities. A patient could stomp on a foot tap mat or use gloves to provide feedback. Microphones can also be used to detect a clap or other sound. The delay between the instruction and performance of the specified action determines how well the action was executed. As patients continue to practice, their coordination will improve and their cognitive abilities will be sharpened.
Although the interactive games are targeted at younger users, there are applications for adults as well. The IM system has even been put to use for military medical applications.
